Smiles

Part of my typical routine on Monday nights is to visit a Goodwill store, which is located close to the YMCA where my daughter’s swim team practices. It is not a particularly uplifting experience, but I occasionally find a treasure (book) there, so the time spent is worthwhile.

The overall energy of the place is low. I usually ramp myself up before entering, just to keep my energy level in check as I work my way back to the book section. There is a pervasive sadness in the store.

I have met a couple of the workers there; at least one of whom has quit. I think part of the problem is the management; but that really has nothing to do with this story.

Last evening I stopped in and spent my usual 20 minutes searching the book shelves.

As I was walking out, a young girl (I would guess under 19) gave me a big smile and said “Hi.”

I smiled and returned the greeting, and thought to myself “What a breath of fresh air.”

I had found a couple books of interest so I went to the front of the store, to join the checkout line.

The clerk, appearing overwhelmed by having three people in line, yelled a woman’s name and asked her to open the other register.

To my surprise and delight the friendly young lady opened the other register and motioned for me to come over. She was not wearing the “uniform” of the store and I had never seen her, so it hadn’t occurred to me that she worked there.

I paid for my purchase and before leaving I had to tell her how much I appreciated the fact that she shared her friendly smile with me.

“Oh. That is what I do best.” She replied.

I told her that she was a bright, welcome addition to the store. This drew a “hrmpf” or something like that from the other clerk.

I walked out of the store with a livelier step than I usually do.

It reminded me of what a great gift our loving smiles can be. I wonder if this young lady has any idea what a blessing she offers each time she shares in that way.

I hope the gloominess of this place does not consume her. She is a beacon in the darkness right now.
