Get Your Rest

It is much easier to remain in peace, when the body and mind are fully rested.

Things that upset our usual calm can become magnified when we are fatigued.

I will share an example from my life.

Just yesterday, I was so exhausted; I was not able to think clearly. At the end of the day, right in the middle of my fourth massage, I imagined that I had scheduled two people for the same time on the following day.

Because my imagining was so real to me, I called the client (once I finished the massage) and learned that, in fact, I had scheduled this individual on a different day. I also realized that if I had only turned the page on my planner, I could have avoided the whole incident, as I had written the appointment down on the correct page.

Here’s the kicker: While talking with this loving client, I began gathering up things to head home. I could not find my cell phone. “I am too tired for this”, I thought feeling genuine panic about how I was going to find my cell phone.

My fatigue had me so disconnected that I did not realize my cell phone was in my hand. How else could I be walking around talking with my lovely client?

Wow! How easily I can allow the events of the world to influence my peacefulness, when I am feeling so tired.

I expect many of us have had similar experiences. “I am just not myself today”, I have heard, after someone bit my head off for no apparent reason.

Being rested makes it easier to stay focused on what is important.

Sometimes things happen which prevent us from getting the rest we need. Most generally, however, it is a matter of pushing ourselves too hard.

Be gentle with yourself. Honor your mind and body’s need for rest.
