Weekly News of Hope

September 28, 2005

This week I am going to experiment with a different format for the News of Hope newsletter. I am spending way too much time, finding and rewriting news stories that I want to include.

I am going to try just putting a very short blurb or a direct quote from the story on this page with a link to read the full story. I will only be sending out a link on the email list, to this page.

I realize many will not read this page, using this format, but I need to find a way to do what I want to do here and still have time to do the things I have to do. Hopefully, this will not cause too much discomfort or disappointment.

Thanks,

Elliott

P.S. This newsletter is evolving. Do not be surprised if I change it every week until I find a format that works for me.

A Modern Ghandi

In the spirit of Martin Luther King, he has led peace marches and meditations with millions of poor people. In the mold of Mahatma Gandhi, he has quieted angry masses through his personal example. Like Jimmy Carter, he has successfully mediated intense conflicts and helped build hundreds of homes. Like the Dalai Lama and the world’s greatest preachers, he has an impressive ability to rally ordinary citizens to see the spiritual wisdom of looking beyond their own salvation to help ensure the salvation of others.

But he is definitely his own man…and is almost completely unknown to ordinary Americans. He is Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, founder of the Sarvodaya Shramadana movement of Sri Lanka.

This Might be Kinda Fun

TLC announces another television program to begin some time in October called That Yin Yang Thing. An Eastern master and a Western Counselor join teams to offer different perspectives to help people fix their lives.

Could be corny but seems to have some potential.

I Wasn't Even Contacted

According to this just release survey, there are 8.9 Million households in the U.S. with net worth in excess of One Million Dollars. This number is up 8% from 8.2 million households in 2004.

I feel left out that I was not even contacted. How do they know??

Top 25 Movies, Male Tearjerker Genre

And I did not even know anyone noticed. GQ lists the top 25 movies that strum male heart strings. I have only seen 14 of the 19 that are listed in this news release. I would not have at least 4 of those on my list.

It might be fun to put together a list of male and female favorite tearjerkers. Or maybe a list of movies that cause chills to run up your spine.

Hmmm. I am going to start threads in the general discussion forum asking people for their favorite movies of all time.

Panda Porn

A $ 660,000 project will soon give Chinese scientists the opportunity to use satellite technology to observe Giant Panda mating habits.

If only we could get the Panda's to carry web cams.

Liars Beware

A scientist claims to have found a way to use MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technology to tell when someone is not telling the truth. Dr. Mark George claims that his method is over 90% accurate at detecting falsehoods. Compared to polygraph exams, which can be very flawed, this method could have far reaching effects, particularly in law enforcement.

No Smoking Country

I had missed this earlier. In 2004, Ireland became the first country to ban smoking in all work places. Anyplace where anyone works, they have a right to work there smoke free, the law reasoned; therefore smoking was even banned in pubs.

Over a year later, the trend is spreading. While there was some resistance when this started, the effects of smoke free workplaces are confirming the intended benefits.

Here is the update.

Pay By the Bag

Friends of the Earth, in England are calling for trash disposal to be charged according to the amount of waste thrown out. If this catchs on, those who refuse to recycle will be penalized for their decision.

Can you see that happening here? We will have to keep trash police to make sure the neighbors are not putting their trash on our driveway.
