Thyself as Final Frontier
“Know Thyself” Socrates insisted, and his student Plato taught.
Some version of this theme may be found in the teachings of any mystic, worthy of study.
Why is this so important?
Quite simply, in knowing yourself, you uncover all the secrets you need to know, to live a life filled with peace.
Of course, you must be committed to self-honesty before you can fully know yourself, but the two go hand in hand. In the process of learning to be completely honest with yourself, many hours will be spent getting to know who you are.
In learning to know yourself, you will discover the greatest teacher you could ever find.
Here are 8 tips to keep in mind as you embark on this endeavor:
1. Become the student; with yourself as the master.
2. Start with a clean slate. Affirm you know nothing. Open yourself to fresh
discovery.
3. Reconnect with the awe of the infant, as you examine your world with “new”
eyes.
4. Observe what you have passion for doing. Take notice of that which feels
painful.
5. What feeds your soul? What drains your energy?
6. Take particular interest in that which brings you joy, for your joy is a
beacon; illuminating the path your soul wishes to travel.
7. Pay attention to where you experience conflict, because what you do is in
opposition to that which you desire.
8. Nothing is hidden from you. Everywhere, everything is a clue. Become the
observer. Sharpen your detective skills. Every answer you seek is neatly
stowed on this path to self discovery.
I am still a student of this process. I do not claim to have figured this all out. But, this much I do know:
* To find peace, you will never need another book; it is not necessary to ever
read another of these emails; nor do you need to seek out some master to
mentor you.
* There is nothing in the outer which can give you peace. Only by enjoying
your day to day walk will you find the peace you seek.
* The more you invest in this inner quest, the quicker you learn that the
journey itself is its own reward.
* Once this secret is discovered, freedom is yours to claim at will.
