Distance Healing study seeks volunteers with cancer

The Public Health Information Systems, Inc. (PHIS) in Ohio , is conducting a study of the effects of distance healing, specifically a technique called Bioenergy, on patients diagnosed with cancer. In the short press release, the possibilities, for patients who have not begun chemotherapy or radiation therapy, sound promising.

This linked article contains contact information if you have any interest in participating in this study. Here is the press release:

Editors Note: I was not able to find any more information on the PHIS, in the brief search that I performed.  In conducting research on the technique called “Bioenergy Healing” I learned that several individuals call their method Bioenergy Healing. I am not certain which method or individual is being featured in the above referenced study.

Here are a couple of the links that I found interesting:

TV taking a turn for the better?

Is it just me or are the television network executives catching up with the pulse of the American people?

I have not been much of a television watcher for years, primarily because I have thought that the programming was detrimental to my personal well being. I find it encouraging, however that some network executives are recognizing that an ever growing segment of the population are desirous of more substantial programming.

One show I have made an effort to watch this year is “The Medium” starring Patricia Arquette (Mondays,10/9 C) on NBC.  While the story line, gets a little too Hollywood-ish for me at times, and I get aggravated, every week, by the arguing between the medium and her husband, I still find the show enjoyable. Of particular interest to me is the way Arquette's character deals with her children’s special gifts. Simply the fact that the world of television is dealing with issues of this nature, is encouraging to me.

The new season for Medium begins on September 19th. Here is a link, in case you would like to read more about the program.  http://www.nbc.com/Medium/

Two new programs in the Reality Television Genre to watch for are:

Dead Tenants – Airing on TLC, October 12th.  This program will feature Psychic Jane Doherty and other psychics as they help homeowners rid their houses of pesky spirits. Here is a nice article on Jane and the upcoming program.

Three Wishes – Airing on NBC,   September 23rd . This program features Amy Grant. Amy and her staff will travel to various places around the country and grant peoples life-changing wishes.  This show promises to be interesting as a wide variety of wish granting is already in the works. If you or anyone you know would like to have their wishes considered. Here is a link to sign up:  Grant My Wish

While on the subject of Television Programming, there is more uplifting news on the forefront.

Verizon, one of the telecommunications giants, has announced that it will be bringing hundreds of new video and audio channels into homes across a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network that it is currently being constructing in 15 states. Called Verizon FiOS TV, the new network is in the acquisition phase for obtaining their programming. While these programs are not scheduled to be online until next year, some still sound exciting to me.

For example they have announced that they will be offering The America Channel. It is described here as follows: The America Channel will explore and celebrate America , its communities, real heroes, and ordinary people who accomplish the extraordinary.

If it really examines the lives of ordinary people who accomplish the extraordinary it will be a wonderful addition to television programming.

Another promising program will be the LIME channel. Described as: Healthy living with a twist, LIME is a 24-hour television network that speaks directly to a growing community of people who want to lead a healthier, greener, and more balanced life. With programs ranging from yoga, Pilates and tai chi, to healthy eating and alternative healing, to personal growth and the environment, LIME allows audiences to tap into this content on their own terms and timeframe.

WOW. It looks like there will finally be television that is really worth watching. I guess I will have to buy a TIVO.

Oops, I almost forgot about Ghost Whisperers, produced by James Van Praagh, this show, based on the life of a real psychic, will begin on CBS, Fridays at 8/7C September 23rd.

Approaching 9/11 Again

In just a few days we will be at the fourth anniversary since the World Trade Center attack. Around the nation, but primarily in New York City there will be numerous events held to commemorate the events of that day. Most of these events will focus on the pain and tragedy that was felt that day, and in many cases, not healed yet.  But there are other ways of dealing with that day. I thought the following ideas were uplifting.

Day of Recollection – Wednesday, Sept. 7  From WTC Survivors

Healing Creative Writing Workshop offered by Aaron Zimmerman, Executive Director of NY Writers' Coalition.

Join us for an afternoon of writing with Aaron, published author, and experienced writing workshop leader. Aaron will take us through “The Healing Power of the Written Word," which focuses on constructive self-expression through writing. The workshop is designed to help writers and non-writers explore writing that promotes stress reduction, healing, insight, and a richer life experience.
6 – 8 PM
St. Vincent 's WTC Healing Services
170 Broadway, 12th floor

I have written before about how useful I have found writing to be in my life. This is a wonderful idea for dealing with all types of stress, even something as traumatic as the WTC.

Next, I thought this was a great, life-affirming way to deal with the remembrance of 9/11. The non-profit group One Days Pay launched a $ 500,000 fundraising campaign to transform September 11th into a day of city-wide charitable service in NYC. The group hopes to spread this idea throughout the entire nation and to establish 9/11 as a National Day of Voluntary Service, Charity and Compassion.  Details...

And Some of us in Kansas Laughed

When Kansas decided to quit teaching evolution, many of us were shocked. For some the disbelief evoked fits of laughter.

A new poll, published in the New York Times, indicates that Kansas is more main-stream than some of us ever expected.  The results of the poll conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, reveals that 64 % of the American public endorses teaching creationism alongside evolution. Of course, the study did vindicate those of us who laughed by indicating that only 38% of those interviewed believed that creationism should replace evolution in the schools.

I had to smile at this little video, which pokes fun at teaching creationism in school:

On the Energy Front

International Automated Systems has developed Solar Energy Production technology, which for the first time ever is competitive, price-wise, with oil and coal based energy production systems. Here is their information and a link to read more:

IAS's  new solar technology is the first to offer the possibility of competing head-to-head with fossil fuels for both electricity and gasoline production. It costs less now than the World Government’s goal for solar power cost per kilowatt by the year 2020. IAS’s unique thin-film lens focuses the sun’s energy, producing super-heated steam for power generation. IAS’s panels are inexpensive, efficient, and require virtually no maintenance. Typical solar reflector panels (e.g. solar dishes, troughs, heliostats) are very expensive and require a great deal of maintenance to sustain a solar focal point. Once installed, IAS’s lenses need no further adjustment.

This company plans on beginning production on these new power producing systems in September of 2005. They do not plan to sell to commercial or residential interests for some time, but they will be marketing their units to existing power companies.

News To Me

I just learned of a company named Clearswift which monitors spam. They have several seed accounts set up, through which they monitor the flow of millions of emails every day. Apparently, Clearswift is one of the leading providers for software which protects businesses from inappropriate or dangerous content. So, they constantly monitor the trash mail and update their spam blockers eight times a day.

I had written a piece,  intended to be tongue in cheek, a couple of years ago about the craziness of the spam I received. Well, this company actually does keep statistics on the type of junk mail that is circulating. It appears that the hottest junk mail floating around right now is the online poker mail. The company has monitored a 1500% increase in the incidence of this particular genre of email since the end of the World Series of Poker even in July.

There is also a proliferation of email which offers software touted to provide superpowers to the user. Despite the fact that this is obviously a silly idea, the company warns that even passing this email to a friend can have unwanted consequences for the sender. Delete, or better yet identify and never open anything that appears to be spam, advises the company.

Kudos to these companies

bulletBayer Corporation today announced that, together with the Bayer Foundation, it has committed $2 million in cash and product donations to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The Bayer Foundation will match Bayer employee donations dollar for dollar, which will then be donated to the American Red Cross.

bulletGilette Corporation announced it is awarding $ 500,000 to 16 neighborhood non-profit organizations in South Boston , to help the agencies address a pervasive drug problem among the communities’ youth. These groups are the first beneficiaries of the Gillette Healthy Opportunity for Prevention and Empowerment (HOPE) Grants.

bulletAccurate Learning System Corporation just released results from a study of the effectiveness of its Mathscore.com, educational site. Very impressive results, which you may read about here, showed that kids (grades 2-8) who used the site to practice their math skills, dramatically improved their scores on standardized tests. It appears that kids found the site fun, and that made them want to visit the site; many doing so voluntarily.  The company hopes to market to schools and to individuals. I give kudos for the creativity to make learning fun. I hope our education systems in general learn the importance of this one day.

bullet The big three automakers announced they would suspend payments for 90 days for those victims of Katrina. Each have their own method of notifying the company, so check with your local office if you think you are affected by this grace period.

It Makes Sense to Me

In a study funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, in England, researchers found out that on organic farms, there are 109 percent more wild plants and 85 percent more plant species than on non-organic farms. Additionally, Organic farms support 32 percent more birds and 35 percent more bats than non-organic farms.  Read the whole report

I guess not having to eat all the poison used by ordinary farmers is attractive even to birds and bats.  I hope that study was not too expensive.

The Hottest Web Cam

Join millions of other Americans and foreigners in viewing the hottest web cam on the net.

No, this is not a web cam you have to wait to view until everyone in the house has gone to bed. If fact, if you get caught with this web cam on at work, your boss may join in watching.

I am talking about the new baby panda  webcam at the National Zoo. This site is so hot you may not be able to view it at certain hours of the day. People are dropping in via the internet to view the lovely baby and his mother, because it is the only way you can see it. Both are being kept inside for now and visitors are not permitted anywhere near the two.

Oh, by the way, when you visit the link to look at the beautiful baby, you may also vote for his name. There are five names to choose from, supplied by the Chinese Government. The baby's name will be announced, when he is 100 days old (I am guessing on or about October 16th).
